How to Prepare For the Police Oral Interview - Get Typical Interview Questions

It's not in your recruit welcome handbook. And those candidates that know about it won't tell you. But your performance during the police oral board interview will ultimately decide if you get hired or not. If you do well during your interview either one of two things will happen. First you may get offered the position contingent on you passing the medical exam, psych test and the drug screen. Secondly you may get placed on the eligibility list for future hire.

That's why it is so important to study up for the oral exam. In the event that you do poorly on the interview you'll likely get a "sorry but no thanks" letter in the mail. Trust me you don't want to get a rejection letter, it feels like a lump is stuck in your belly. Not a very good feeling.

Why do you want to be a police officer? What have you've done to prepare yourself for this position? Give us an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership? What is your career objective? What do you know about our agency, starting with the Chief's first and last name?

Once you practice answering the questions above, start practicing your closing statement. The panel will likely ask you if there's anything else you want to say toward the end of the interview.

This is time you want to show your knowledge of the department, point out your strengths, and clear up any mistakes that you may have made during the interview.

Five Creative Methods of Teaching English to TEFL Learners

As English teachers, we’re almost always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to stimulate our language learners. It was ELT author and researcher Stephen D. Krashen who gave us his Affective Filter hypothesis of Second or Foreign language acquisition. (Krashen – Terrell, 1983) His hypothesis states, that conditions which promote low anxiety levels in class allow improved learning on the part of students. When learners enjoy class activities their Affective Filter is low and they learn more. New and different activities “out of the norm” also lower learner affective filters.

Here are some not-so-commonly-used techniques for adding that “new twist” to your English or foreign language classes. Giving learners something new does wonders in relieving boredom, spiking interest and lowering the Affective Filter of learners on whom you may have “tried everything”.

Although I’m old enough to remember his presence and passing, Walt Disney can still make us laugh, smile, cry and cheer with the antics of scores of his characters and their families. Take some short “clips” from his animated stories. Change the situation. Alter the characters. Modify an ending or a beginning to cause a whole different outlook on age-old themes. Are your stories and characters better? As long as they’re different, stimulating and generate interest or discussion, that’s all that matters. 4. Letting Learners Create Lesson Materials

Turnabout is fair play, or so they say. Take a day to switch roles. Have you ever let your learners write an exam? How about planning a fun class? Having a “hot” conversation on a topic that THEY want to talk about – music, movies, cute guys / gals, techno-babble? Nothing is taboo – well almost nothing, anyway! What do you think they’ll talk about? You’d be surprised!

5. Join the Club

Let’s all go to the Conversation Club. What you don’t have one? Okay then, start one – every Thursday from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm or whatever time, day and duration may suit you and your learners. The key is to give THEM the majority of control, or at least as much as possible. Use props, use realia, use pictures, music or whatever you and your learners may have on hand to start, stop and sustain the activities. Other “clubs” you could join include:

• Pronunciation clubs

• Reading clubs

• Movie clubs

• Acting Clubs

Use your and your learners’ imaginations. The sky’s the limit – or maybe the Administration’s sky is the limit. But no matter, just try something new for starters.

Try out some of these not-so-commonly-used techniques for adding that “new twist” to your English or foreign language classes. Give your learners something new to relieve any boredom and spike their interest. Can’t you just hear those Affective Filters falling now?

What Is a Podcast and How Does It Work?

Podcasts can be an effective method of developing traffic, attracting customers and building your credibility. It can turn you from a want to-be to a true expert in the eyes of your customers and prospects.

But what is a podcast?

The term itself is a contraction of two words - iPod and broadcast. The Apple iPod of course, is an MP3 player. An electronic version of the old tape recorder if you will.

What Is a Podcast and How Does It Work?

So the term itself would indicate that a podcast is some form of a regular broadcast using MP3 audio format and portable players -- the Apple name being optional. But a podcast is really both more and less than this.

For the purposes of this article I'm going to deal with what a podcast is on four levels.

1. A podcast is an audio file. In theory it is provided in MP3 format. MP3 format is a very capable, yet very compact format used for audio recording. It is also manufacturer independent. However, podcasts can also be provided using either the Windows native format (WMA) or Apple's Quicktime audio. In fact, there are a large number of audio formats available and podcasts can be found in any of them. However, MP3 is the most popular format.

2. It is intended to be retrieved from a website (e.g. iTunes or the creator's website) and downloaded to an MP3 player such as the iPod or one of many other manufacturers products. This recording can then be played back at any time while the audience is busy doing something else. Cars are a frequent location for the playback of these files. Busy commuters can listen to something useful while traveling to and from the office.

3. Content is whatever the podcast creator wishes. Like any radio broadcast. However, typically they tend to be focused on spoken content rather than music. This content can be provided in a number of different forms including teleseminars, interviews and readings.

4. In theory podcasts do not have to be regular. However, in practice they fit into two types. One time podcasts are usually not referred to as podcasts. The repeating podcast is repeated either once per week or once per month or daily. In short, they are meant to be a regularly re-occurring broadcast of opinion, information or news. In practice, audio files which are one-time only are referred to as MP3s. The term podcast is usually restricted to broadcasts which repeat on a regular basis.

What Is The Difference Between Advertising And Publicity?

As a free radio advertising and radio publicity expert people often ask me that very question. Advertising and publicity...what's the difference? Both are necessary to the survival of your business and both are easy to get. Both can also cost you a ton of money, or come to you free of charge. Let's start with advertising.

Advertising: Whether it is on the radio, in the newspaper, on television, through direct mail campaigns, or on the Internet, the one key to traditional advertising is that it costs money. If you drive down the highway and see a billboard with a can of soda on it, the makers of that soda paid money to have their message plastered on that billboard. If you are listening to the radio and a car dealer starts screaming in your ear about "MSRP" and 'Making room for the new models," they paid the radio station to broadcast that message to the entire listening area. In the traditional sense of the word advertising equals "Paid for" however, there is such a thing as "free advertising" which costs nothing and is infinitely more effective than the traditional paid variety.

Publicity: Publicity is a little less specific. Publicity traditionally refers to any media coverage or attention that you receive that is contained within the "content of a publication or broadcast." For example, if you own a shoe store and the TV news comes by to do a story about your annual 'Shoe Drive For the Homeless" that is considered publicity. If you are an accountant and the Wall Street Journal writes a story about your attempt to set the record for most tax returns prepared in the month of April, that is also considered publicity. While the actual media coverage and content you receive is free, there are several costs associated with publicity including, travel expenses, event costs, and publicists fees. The expenses associated with so-called free publicity can be just as high as an advertising campaign.

What Is The Difference Between Advertising And Publicity?

If you have a product or service that you are trying to sell, you need one or the other (and often both) to not only succeed, but to survive. The lines can often be blurred. In my professional opinion, the best way to get free advertising and free publicity for yourself and your business is to get booked on radio and TV talk shows as an expert guest. When you get booked as a talk show expert you accomplish several important things.

1. You establish yourself as an expert in your field

2. You get free advertising

3. You sell products

Stop worrying about whether you need to hire an ad agency or a publicist, and simply get as mush media exposure for as little money as possible. Spend less than you make. That is the true key to success in business.

How to Get Radio Interviews - Get Booked on Radio Shows to Promote Yourself and Your Products Free

How to get radio interviews is a common public relations question, especially for authors, experts, and marketers. You can get booked for free radio publicity interviews as an interview guest to promote your product or book on radio show interviews, if you follow these steps:

1. Identify radio shows that book guest experts like you for interviews:

The fastest way to do this is to search on Google using search terms like "radio talk show"+ "your topic". (NOTE: You want to search on "talk radio" rather than just "radio" to find shows that book guest experts for promotional interviews instead of only playing music!)

2. Find contact info for the radio show's producers or bookers:

Hello! Create a Customer-Friendly Voice Mail Greeting

Who answers your business phone when you're not in the office? Most home-based business owners use an answering machine or voice messaging system. But it's not enough to just make sure the phone gets picked up when you're not there; the greeting your callers hear says more about you than just "leave a message."

That announcement may be the first contact someone has with you, and if you don't sound professional, the caller may not leave a message or may not call back.

It's not necessary to sound like you're a major corporation, but it is important to sound like you're a serious, legitimate operation. Use these tips to create an effective voice mail greeting:

- Write a script. Don't try to record off the top of your head. Write a script that covers all the points you want to make in a concise format. Practice it so you can record without any awkward pauses or stumbles.

- Be friendly, but avoid being cute. Speak in a warm, friendly voice that lets your personality show through, but don't try to be cute or funny-it's not professional, and it could easily backfire.

- Avoid the obvious. It's not necessary to say things like "I'm away from my desk" or "I'm out of the office"-callers know that because you didn't answer the phone. Ditto with statements like "Your call is important to me"-callers know they're hearing a recording that you've made for everyone, so don't waste their time with generic fluff.

- Change your message frequently. People with flexible schedules may even change their announcement daily so the information is always current and accurate.

- Let callers know when you'll be available. If you won't be able to return calls for several hours, or until the next day, say so in your announcement so people aren't left wondering when they'll hear from you.

- Tell callers how to skip the message. If your system has the feature that allows callers to bypass the greeting by pressing * or #, include that in your announcement.

- Include your fax number and website or e-mail address. Some callers may just want to send you a fax or an e-mail; if your greeting tells them how to do it, you won't need to call them back.

- Provide alternate contact information. If you carry a pager or a cell phone and don't mind taking calls while you're out of the office, include that number in your greeting. An alternative is a system that automatically pages you when someone leaves a message, so you can quickly decide how soon to return the call.

- Include seasonal messages. Between Thanksgiving and the end of the year, start your greeting with "Happy holidays." For greetings that indicate you're closed for long weekends such as Memorial Day or Labor Day, end with a wish for a safe and happy holiday.

Here's a sample script:"This is Joe Smith. To bypass this announcement and leave a message, press # and begin speaking at the tone. Please leave your name, telephone number, the best time to reach you, and a brief message, and I will return your call within three hours. If you need to send a fax, that number is 888-123-4567. Or please visit my website at www-dot-websitename-dot-com for more information or to send me an e-mail. Have a great day!"

Podcasting is the latest trend online and it keeps on improving everyday. It is the result term for combining the two words iPod and broadcasting. Podcast is used to describe the video and audio supplies felt comfy for several users.
